The Election Commission (EC) has implemented a significant change concerning online voter ID services. To add new names, make corrections, or remove names from voter lists, verification via a mobile number linked to the Aadhaar card is now mandatory. The EC has launched an e-sign feature on its ECINet portal and app to facilitate this. This move follows an incident in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency, where thousands of voter deletions were alleged. The e-sign feature uses the unique identification number system of India to digitally sign documents. This has been introduced as a verification process for deleting or correcting voter IDs. Previously, submitting forms was possible by linking a mobile number with the voter ID number (EPIC), sometimes leading to the use of incorrect numbers. Now, applicants must enter their Aadhaar number, receive an OTP on the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar, and submit the form only after giving consent. After the e-sign process, applicants will be redirected to the ECINet portal to submit the form. This rule will apply to Form 6 (new registration), Form 7 (deletion/objection), and Form 8 (correction).
The change was prompted by the alleged fraudulent deletion of thousands of voters in Karnataka’s Aland assembly constituency. Investigations revealed that out of 6,018 deletion requests, only 24 were legitimate, while the rest were incorrect. The mobile numbers used for OTPs did not belong to the actual voters in many instances. This event compelled the EC to strengthen security and verification processes, leading to the implemented changes.
The EC emphasizes that no voter’s name can be directly deleted online. Physical verification by the concerned Booth Level Officer (BLO) and Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) is essential. Voters will be given a full opportunity to present their case.
ECINet, launched earlier this year, consolidates approximately 40 older apps and portals, including ERONet. Through this platform, voters can easily apply online, and officials can take action on those applications. The e-sign feature has been added to this platform to ensure transparency and security.
