Ganesh Chaturthi: Pranav and Karan Adani Join 107‑Year‑Old Chinchpokli Celebration

Mumbai – On the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Pranav Adani, director of Adani Enterprises, and Karan Adani, managing director of Adani Ports & SEZ, visited the historic Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani temple with their families. Their attendance highlighted the festival’s significance as a cultural mainstay in the city.

Pranav Adani, who also heads the agro, oil and gas divisions of the group, lauded the Chinchpokli Public Festival Committee for upholding a legacy that now spans 107 years. He noted that the celebration represents the devotion, unity and distinct cultural fabric of Mumbai.

The Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani event, regarded as Mumbai’s second oldest public Ganesh celebration, originated in the textile mill districts of Parel, Girgaum and Lalbaug. It carries forward the pioneering spirit of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who, in the 1890s, transformed the private worship of Lord Ganesha into a mass public festival.

This year’s theme drew inspiration from South Indian temple architecture. The Ganesh idol was styled after Tirumala Tirupati’s Venkateshwara Balaji, embellished with traditional emblems such as the Garuda, shankh, chakra and camphor tilak. The pandal architecture reflected the golden Venkateshwara temple of Hyderabad and Bhuvanagiri, showcasing soaring gopurams, illuminated pillars and guardian figures of Yali and Vyala.

Despite the historic 1982 Bombay textile mill strike and subsequent urban transformation, the Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani festival continues to serve as a cultural beacon. It operates with the support of about 5,000 contributors who also manage health and education programmes. Since 1939, the celebration has been held near the eastern side of Chinchpokli railway station, consistently organized by the public festival committee.

Beyond the festivities, the committee runs blood‑donation camps, health‑service initiatives and child‑welfare projects, reinforcing its role as a year‑round social service organisation.
