Genetic Traits and Central Obesity Drive Metabolic Crisis in India, Minister Highlights
During his address at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences, Dr. Jitendra Singh outlined why Indian populations are especially prone to metabolic disorders. He cited genetic factors, a higher tendency for central obesity and a distinct body phenotype that accelerates the onset of Type‑2 diabetes, fatty liver and cardiovascular disease, even in individuals with relatively low Body Mass Index.
These intrinsic characteristics, combined with unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, and environmental pollution, have created a perfect storm for a burgeoning health crisis. Singh argued that reliance on foreign data alone is insufficient; India must generate its own epidemiological evidence, develop localized research, and craft indigenous solutions.
The minister called for sustained scientific cooperation and community involvement to mitigate the growing burden. He stressed that while the liver is a resilient organ capable of self‑repair, continuous exposure to metabolic stressors can overwhelm its capacity, leading to severe public‑health implications.
