Government promises regulatory relief for overseas chip makers eyeing Indian factories
New Delhi – In a bid to lure overseas semiconductor manufacturers, the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has instructed BIS to design a more accommodative certification process. During a summit in Tokyo, Minister Piyush Goyal said the government will roll out a set of exemptions that can be tailored to the needs of foreign investors.
Key elements of the proposal include product‑specific waivers, collective discounts for groups of equipment, and project‑level incentives that can cut down lead times for critical imports. The aim is to eliminate bottlenecks that often delay the commencement of production lines.
The minister also highlighted ongoing strategic dialogue with Japan, noting that both countries stand to gain from deeper collaboration in high‑technology manufacturing, research and supply‑chain integration.
These regulatory tweaks are expected to complement other policy measures such as tax incentives, land allocation and skill‑development programs that together seek to transform India into a premier destination for chip and AI production.
