You've likely seen the round Dish TV antennas on rooftops. Many people simply see them as a dish, but do you know the technology behind them and how it works? This article explains the function of a dish antenna and why signals disappear during bad weather.
Dish TV antennas capture microwave frequency signals from satellites. The antenna's parabolic shape is designed to focus satellite signals onto a single point (focal point). A Low Noise Block (LNB) installed in the dish receives these signals.
The LNB is a crucial part of the dish, receiving high-frequency signals from the satellite and converting them into lower-frequency signals. These modified signals are then sent to the set-top box via a coaxial cable.
By the time the signals reach the set-top box, they are digital codes. The set-top box, connected to your TV, decodes these codes and converts them into video and audio signals that your TV can understand. Essentially, the dish antenna, LNB, and set-top box are all essential for the picture and sound you see and hear on your television.
