India Pushes for Stronger Accountability from Social Media Platforms

New Delhi, August 6 – The Indian government is intensifying its oversight of online platforms, with Meta at the forefront of recent discussions. Officials are preparing to press the social‑media giant on the transparency of its content recommendation algorithm and the effectiveness of its moderation protocols.

Cited government insiders say that the forthcoming consultations will delve into whether Meta’s systems are adequately filtering harmful content, including deep‑fakes, extremist narratives and child sexual abuse material, in line with the nation’s legal framework. The push for accountability comes amid rising public anxiety over the proliferation of such material.

Meta’s international team will stay engaged with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, sharing technical details and data on content distribution patterns. The aim is to verify that the platform’s operations respect Indian law and do not facilitate the spread of illegal content.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav is slated to meet Meta’s delegation again, potentially this Thursday, to evaluate the company’s steps toward compliance and to set expectations for future reporting.
