From E20 to E30: India’s Roadmap Mirrors Brazil and US Efforts

India’s ethanol‑blending journey, now at a 20 percent level (E20), mirrors the trajectories of early adopters such as Brazil and the United States. Brazil, the world’s biofuel champion, routinely supplies gasoline with up to E30 and even runs pure ethanol (E100) in certain regions. The United States, meanwhile, has standardized blends of E10 to E15 across most states.

European nations have collectively embraced E10, with Finland planning an ambitious E22.5 target for 2027. Canada’s provinces vary between E5 and E12, showing that regional preferences can coexist under a national policy. In Latin America, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru are experimenting with blends ranging from E7.8 to E12, while Paraguay and Bolivia have already set E30 and E25 goals respectively.

In Asia, Nepal’s mandatory E10, Thailand’s optional E20/E85, and Japan’s timeline of E10 by 2030 and E20 by 2040 illustrate a broad consensus on ethanol’s role in reducing oil imports and emissions. African countries—from Uganda’s dual goal of E5/E20 to Zimbabwe’s E20—are also joining the movement.

India’s announced target of achieving an E30 blend by 2030 reflects a strategic commitment to energy diversification, carbon‑intensity reduction, and greater fuel self‑reliance, aligning it with the global community of nations accelerating the shift toward renewable‑rich transport fuels.
