India Secures Spot in EU's Updated Seafood Export List

India's marine export sector breathes a sigh of relief as the European Union incorporates the country into its modified draft list. This crucial update allows uninterrupted shipments of fishery products to EU markets well past 2026. Commerce and Industry Ministry officials described the decision as a major boost, reflecting the EU's trust in India's control mechanisms and hygiene protocols. It's a hard-earned recognition of the nation's commitment to international benchmarks. Formal adoption by the European Commission will lock in this advantage, ensuring stability for exporters. In the fiscal year 2025-26, the EU ranked third among India's seafood buyers, absorbing exports worth $1.593 billion—18.94% of the total pie. Year-on-year, shipments to the bloc jumped 41.45% in value and 38.29% in quantity, led by vannamei shrimp from aquaculture farms. This growth trajectory now looks even more promising. The revision corrects an error from the EU's Implementing Regulation (EU) of October 4, 2024, where India was missing from approved third-country exporters for animal products starting September 2026. Only compliant nations, enforcing antimicrobial restrictions and offering solid assurances, made the cut. Behind this success lie coordinated initiatives from government bodies like MPEDA and EIC, focusing on traceability, sustainability, and quality assurance. For an industry employing millions, this development signals brighter prospects amid global trade challenges.
