India Wind Capacity Could Shape 2070 Power Demand Growth

New Delhi, November 2: India's wind energy resources may be substantially larger than earlier projections, a new report has indicated. The think tank made the findings public on Monday.

The report places onshore wind potential at about 1,209.7 gigawatts when measured at 150 metres above ground. At 200 metres, the estimate rises to around 2,933.9 gigawatts.

For offshore wind, the report projects roughly 220 gigawatts and 277 gigawatts at a minimum wind speed of 7.0 metres per second.

The analysis also points to priority areas where resource capacity requires further verification. Recommendations include measures to develop wind energy, strengthen supporting infrastructure, and enhance industry capabilities.

India's installed wind capacity stood at 59.20 gigawatts on September 30, 2026, after a record addition of about 6.05 gigawatts in fiscal 2025-26.

The report underlines that rising power demand and renewable expansion make accurate wind data essential for planning generation, procuring clean energy, and deciding where transmission investments should go.

Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka account for approximately 61 per cent of the estimated 150-metre potential. Adding Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu lifts the combined share of the five states to nearly 79 per cent.

Looking ahead, the report estimates that India's grid-connected electricity demand could increase about 11 times its present level by 2070.
