533 Centres, 10,905 Autopsies: State Steps Up For Modern Forensic Services

Maharashtra's forensic ecosystem is undergoing a digital transformation. With 533 post‑mortem centres operational across the state, officials reported that a total of 10,905 autopsies were completed by May 2026.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted that the introduction of non‑invasive virtual autopsy technology in Mumbai will further streamline the process. The new system, which relies on advanced imaging rather than physical dissection, promises quicker results, fewer staff requirements, and a higher degree of accuracy.

The government has already finalized procurement contracts for the cutting‑edge machines required at J.J. Hospital and KEM Hospital. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce the backlog of pending reports, which has fallen from an estimated 300,000 cases to around 75,000 after improving the speed of the Forensic Science Laboratory.

Fadnavis announced a comprehensive audit of all centres to address staffing gaps, infrastructure deficits, and resource shortages. He also reiterated the state's commitment to maintaining strict confidentiality: any premature disclosure of autopsy findings before official police submission will be treated as a criminal offence.
