NFC Gets a Boost: New Update Extends Range to 2cm

The Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is undergoing a significant upgrade with the release of NFC Release 15 by the NFC Forum. This update increases the maximum contactless range from 0.5 cm to 2 cm, a fourfold increase in operating volume. This enhancement promises smoother interactions for tasks like mobile payments, unlocking devices, and pairing gadgets. The upgrade also introduces technical improvements to enhance the speed and consistency of connections, particularly beneficial for devices with smaller form factors such as wearables and smartphones. The new standard is expected to improve experiences in public transport, wearables, automotive applications, and smartphone functionalities like tap-to-pay.
