Sewage treatment emerges as top investment theme in India's water outlook

According to the PL Capital study, sewage treatment is poised to become the single largest investment segment within India's water sector. The country produces more than 72,000 million litres of sewage each day, yet treatment facilities handle only a fraction, leaving vast quantities of untreated waste flowing into rivers and soils.

Bridging this gap will require massive capital infusion, estimated at a portion of the overall ₹20 lakh crore water‑sector budget projected for the 2024‑2034 period. Strengthened allocations in the water ministry’s budget are already earmarked for expanding potable‑water supply, upgrading sewer networks and deploying advanced waste‑water treatment plants.

The report also points to emerging industrial needs. Expansion of data‑centre capacities, semiconductor fabs, electronics manufacturing, green‑hydrogen projects and specialty‑chemical plants will drive demand for ultra‑pure industrial water, further stimulating the treatment and recycling market.

Vikram Kasat noted that, unlike transport or power assets, water‑related investments stay resilient regardless of economic cycles. He called for long‑term, policy‑backed financing to secure water security and sustain the anticipated demand for high‑grade treatment solutions.
