Strategic Advantages of Panama Highlighted for Indian Exporters
New Delhi – In a recent high‑level meeting at Mumbai’s MVIRDC World Trade Centre, Panama’s ambassador Alonzo Miguel laid out the strategic benefits that Panama offers Indian exporters seeking a foothold in the Americas.
Miguel pointed to Panama’s prime geographical position, the Panama Canal’s global shipping significance, and a mature maritime‑logistics ecosystem. The presence of Special Economic Zones and the Colon Free Trade Zone, he explained, provides Indian companies with attractive options for regional distribution, warehousing, and even full‑scale production.
Key industries such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, automotive, motorcycles, engineering, consumer goods and technology stand to gain from establishing regional headquarters or distribution hubs in the country.
The ambassador noted that Panama can mitigate common market‑entry hurdles—logistical complexities, local regulatory frameworks, and distribution network gaps—thereby smoothing the path for Indian firms across South America and the Caribbean.
According to Dr. Vijay Kalantari, chair of the MVIRDC World Trade Centre, current bilateral trade is about US$600 million. With enhanced B2B linkages and focused sectoral cooperation, the partnership could exceed US$1.2 billion within two years.
