New Delhi – The Income Tax Department expressed gratitude to Indian taxpayers after receiving over 5.9 crore income‑tax returns by the July 31 deadline for Assessment Year 2026-27. The department emphasized that punctual compliance plays a vital role in sustaining the country’s economic momentum.
A message posted on the department’s X platform read, “Thank you, taxpayers! Over 5.9 crore ITRs filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31. Your confidence and on‑time compliance propel India’s development forward.”
On the last day alone, more than 40 lakh returns were filed, covering individuals and entities exempt from mandatory audits.
Filing activity surged in the final weeks: 1.7 crore by July 11, 3 crore by July 22, 4 crore by July 27, and the tally crossed 5 crore on July 31. The number rose to over 5.5 crore before the day ended and ultimately exceeded 5.9 crore.
The department repeatedly urged taxpayers to avoid procrastination, recommending early e‑filing to sidestep portal congestion and potential technical glitches.
For AY 2026-27, the Central Board of Direct Taxes introduced revised ITR forms, adding new disclosure requirements for long‑term capital gains, share buy‑back losses, certain trading transactions, and other essential information. These updates aim to boost transparency and simplify compliance.
In the preceding financial year 2024-25, more than 9 crore taxpayers filed returns, and the department disbursed tax refunds exceeding Rs 4.35 lakh crore, reflecting the expanding reach and efficiency of India’s direct tax administration.
