Thousands Face WhatsApp Lockout, Appeal Process Takes Up to 24 Hours

Delhi, August 4 – Reports indicate that thousands of WhatsApp users have experienced sudden account closures. The platform’s in‑app notification reads, "Account is under review. Appeal date: August 3, 2026," and assures that a decision will typically be communicated within a day.

Users claim they were unable to use the official app for essential communication, with some stating that their professional work relies heavily on WhatsApp. One user posted on a social networking site, "My account was shut down without any warning. I only use the official app, and my job depends on WhatsApp. Please assist – this was unnecessary."

The notification also includes a "Learn about account issues" button, which directs users to resources on safe usage, handling stolen devices, and filing appeals.

The incident coincides with earlier suggestions that the Indian government may introduce uniform standards for messaging platforms, following disputes over WhatsApp’s upcoming username feature that would let users converse without revealing phone numbers.
