Tiruvarur Bypass Gets Rs 1,427 Crore Sanction from Centre

In a decisive push to decongest one of Tamil Nadu’s busiest inland routes, the Centre has cleared Rs 1,427.61 crore for the four-laning of the Tiruvarur bypass on NH-83. The 14.9 km elevated corridor will also feature two new road-over-bridges, easing rail crossings on NH-129A and NH-134A. Once completed, the bypass will reroute heavy vehicles around Tiruvarur’s heritage core, freeing local streets for pedestrians and two-wheelers. Travel time between the industrial belts of Tiruchirappalli-Coimbatore and the coastal ports is expected to drop by up to fifteen minutes, boosting just-in-time delivery for agro-industries and fisheries. The alignment threads through Adiyakkamangalam, Athipuliyur, Andipalayam, Kidaramkondan, Pallivaramangalam, Perumpugulur, Ilavangarkudi, and Anaivadi Colony, knitting together previously fragmented market linkages. Improved connectivity to SH-23, SH-65, and the Thyagaraja Swamy Temple is projected to lift pilgrimage tourism and roadside enterprise. The Ministry emphasised that road-safety gains will be immediate: removal of through traffic from narrow municipal roads should cut collision rates and ease emergency-response times. The project aligns with the government’s goal of building an expressway-grade network across the southern peninsula. Simultaneously, Gadkari chaired a high-level review of highway maintenance covering thousands of kilometres in Punjab, Delhi, and Haryana, reinforcing that new assets must be paired with rigorous upkeep.
