Over 100,000 Flee Western Yemen, Thousands Reach Djibouti by Sea

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) disclosed that more than one hundred thousand people have abandoned their homes in Yemen's western coastal districts as hostilities surge. Thousands have taken the perilous crossing of the Bab‑al‑Mandeb Strait to seek safety in neighboring Djibouti.

In the past four days alone, over 2,400 individuals made the sea journey, with women, children and elderly comprising more than sixty percent of the travelers. UNHCR highlighted that shelter, food, clean water, health care and protection are the most urgent needs for those sheltering in makeshift camps, which are already under severe pressure.

The agency is closely monitoring a possible drift of displaced persons toward Somalia and is preparing contingency plans for additional arrivals.
