600 Million LKR Grant Powers Emergency Care Upgrade in Mannar

Colombo – A substantial grant of 600 million Sri Lankan rupees from India has cleared the way for a brand‑new two‑storey Accident and Emergency unit at Mannar District General Hospital. The ceremony on September 16 marked the start of construction.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Health Minister Nalinda Jayathissa, and Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha were present as the foundation stone was set.

The funding will cover both the structural work and the acquisition of modern medical equipment, ensuring that critical patients receive care within the vital "golden hour" timeframe. The project is billed as a concrete example of the enduring India‑Sri Lanka partnership.

High Commissioner Jha described the grant as a "true testament" of shared commitment to people‑centric development, adding that the collaboration has already produced model villages and other community‑level improvements.

The endeavour falls under the umbrella of the India‑Sri Lanka Foundation, a bilateral trust that finances projects spanning health, education, technology and culture.
