After the attacks by Pakistan -backed terrorists in Pahalgam and India’s exact counter -operation ‘Operation Sindoor’, the central government is now preparing to take a big step in the defense sector.
According to sources, the government can bring a proposal to add an additional amount of Rs 50,000 crore to the defense budget in the upcoming winter session. This fund will be made available under supplementary budget i.e. supplementary budget.
If this proposal is approved, then India’s total defense budget will be more than Rs 7 lakh crore for the first time. Earlier, in the general budget presented on 1 February 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a defense budget of Rs 6.81 lakh crore, which was 9.2 percent more than 6.22 lakh crore in FY 2024-25.

Modern technology and promoting indigenous weapons
According to government sources, this additional budget will be used to strengthen research and development, procurement of smart weapons, state-of-the-art ammunition and digital war technology. Also, this amount will be spent on the technical upgradation required for the three armies.
In ‘Operation Sindoor’, India first launched a technology -based counter -based counter -border attacker, which used equipment developed in a country such as drone warfare system, electronic interception system, and Leard Air Defense Technology. It is being considered a big step towards India’s military self -sufficiency.
Impact of ‘Make in India’ in the defense sector
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated in a recent statement that India can no longer leave its security on the trust of other countries. He said, “We have to become self -sufficient to meet our defense needs. This is not just a strategic policy, but the basis of long -term security of the nation.”
Significantly, when the Modi government came to power at the Center in the year 2014, the defense budget was only 2.29 lakh crore rupees. In the last decade, this figure has exceeded three times, which reflects the government’s security priorities and indigenization in defense construction.
