In the wake of escalating tensions, Iran has appointed Major General Amir Hatami as the new Army Chief. This appointment comes after an Israeli strike led to the elimination of several high-ranking Iranian military officials, triggering a retaliatory missile barrage from Iran targeting Israel. Hatami, who previously served as Iran’s Defence Minister from 2013 to 2021, was chosen based on his ‘dedication, competence, and experience,’ according to an official decree from Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. He replaces Lieutenant General Seyyed Abdolrahim Mousavi, following the recent events. Alongside Hatami’s appointment, Major General Mohammad Pakpour was also named Commander-in-Chief of the IRGC, indicating significant leadership changes within Iran’s military structure.
