A 19-year-old from Arizona, Renna O’Rourke, has died after participating in the ‘dusting’ trend, which involves inhaling aerosol cleaners to get high. Her father reported that her boyfriend obtained the keyboard cleaner without their knowledge. Inhaling the cleaner caused her to suffer cardiac arrest, leading to her being placed in the ICU for four days, after which she was declared brain dead. The ‘dusting’ trend, also known as ‘huffing’ or ‘chroming’, can cause heart failure, as highlighted by the Cleveland Clinic. Renna’s family is now working to raise awareness about the dangers of this social media trend, urging parents to monitor their children’s activities. A GoFundMe page has also been set up to help cover medical and therapy expenses. This tragic event echoes a similar case in the UK in March 2024, where a boy died after inhaling toxic substances.
