In Pakistan, the popularity of General Asim Munir is surging. He has been made a Field Marshal by the Shehbaz government, and there is speculation that he may become the next president. This has seemingly put current President Asif Ali Zardari’s position at risk.
Zardari has appointed Murtaza Solangi, a senior journalist and former interim information minister, as his spokesperson. This unexpected appointment suggests that Zardari feels his position is threatened and is working to strengthen his grip on power.
Murtaza Solangi shared this information on X, writing, “A small personal news, I have been appointed as the spokesperson to the President of Pakistan. I will assume my new responsibilities from tomorrow. Thank you.”
Several army chiefs in Pakistan have seized control of the government through coups. However, it appears that the Shehbaz government is acting strategically, and to protect the Prime Minister’s chair, they are considering offering Asim Munir the ‘lollipop’ of the presidency.
From making Asim Munir a Field Marshal to sending him to meet Trump in America, Shehbaz Sharif’s actions demonstrate a calculated approach. Asim Munir’s influence is growing in Pakistan, which poses a threat to Asif Ali Zardari.
Asif Ali Zardari has now chosen his spokesperson, through whom he can connect more with the public and also disseminate his communications in any emergency. Solangi previously managed over 3,000 employees in 64 broadcasting units at Radio Pakistan (2008-2013). He played a significant role in establishing relationships with international broadcasters such as Voice of America, China Radio International, and Deutsche Welle.
Solangi also made history by becoming the first Pakistani to be elected as the Vice President and later the Acting President of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. In 2011, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan for his contributions to media and public service.
