Australia’s Trade Deal Fuels $50 bn Bilateral Commerce and Space Collaboration

Bengaluru, September 7 – The Australian Trade and Investment Commission’s chief, Nathan Davis, said the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) signed in 2022 has driven Indo‑Australian trade to a historic AUD 50 billion level. The surge in commerce has, in turn, given a significant boost to joint space initiatives.

Davis explained that the agreement opened doors for a comprehensive MoU between ISRO and the Australian Space Agency (ASA), which he described as the highest‑level partnership among space agencies worldwide. The MoU builds on a broader strategic framework established in 2021, covering sectors from cyber‑technology to satellite services.

The official pointed out that tariff reductions on Indian imports and a thriving ecosystem of technology firms in both countries have created a symbiotic relationship. Australian raw‑material supplies complement India’s massive manufacturing supply chain, while Indian tech expertise and a diaspora of over one million Indians in Australia enhance collaborative innovation.

According to Davis, the partnership now spans the full spectrum of the space value chain – from university‑led research and launch capabilities to satellite production, earth observation, in‑space manufacturing, and AI‑driven analytics – positioning both nations for a new era of joint scientific and commercial space endeavors.
