Australian opposition deputy meets Indian envoy to boost bilateral partnership

In Canberra on Monday, the Indian High Commissioner Nagesh Singh convened with Andrew Hastie, the deputy leader of the Australian opposition and shadow minister for industry and sovereign capability, inside the lower house of Parliament. The conversation pivoted on ways to solidify the India‑Australia relationship and to explore fresh collaborative projects across defence, technology and sustainable development.

The Indian High Commission’s social platform reported that the exchange was “constructive and upbeat,” with both officials signalling a willingness to move beyond existing agreements toward deeper, more diversified cooperation.

Earlier, on 25 April, Singh had met former Prime Minister Scott Morrison, where the dialogue again stressed the resilience of the bilateral relationship and Morrison’s personal connection with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi’s July three‑day Australian tour featured a meeting with Morrison in Melbourne, a bilateral session with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and discussions with Governor‑General Sam Costello and Victoria’s Governor. He also joined the Australia‑India CEO Forum and addressed the Indian diaspora in Melbourne.

At the third Australia‑India Annual Summit, both nations reviewed progress in trade, critical minerals, clean energy, defence, education, skill‑building, scientific research, cultural exchange and people‑to‑people links, reaffirming their resolve to foster a free and prosperous Indo‑Pacific region.
