Potential fines up to $100 million for platform breaches in Australia

Australia is moving to enforce some of the world’s toughest online safety rules. Following a 2024 law that barred children under 16 from using social media, the government signaled in June that fines for breaching the age‑restriction could rise to 9.9 million Australian dollars per offence. Under the new Digital Duty of Care framework, platforms that do not provide the algorithm‑opt‑out option or that expose minors to prohibited content could be hit with penalties totaling up to 100 million dollars in severe cases.
