Following the European Union’s stance against Israel, Australia is also mobilizing. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a significant decision regarding Palestine, following the lead of France, the UK, and Canada. According to the announcement, Australia will recognize Palestine as an independent state during the United Nations General Assembly session in September.
During a media interaction, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that peace can only be temporary until the status of Israel and the Palestinian state becomes permanent. For this reason, Australia will recognize Palestine as a state. The Prime Minister clarified that despite recognition, they will continue to emphasize the two-state solution to end the violence and crisis in Gaza.
This announcement comes after weeks of calls from cabinet members and the public for recognition, amid growing criticism of the government over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. This declaration by Australia will be based on certain conditions.
