General elections are scheduled to take place in Bangladesh next February. This announcement was recently made by Professor Mohammad Yunus, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh. Concurrently, there are reports that the Election Commission has formulated a new plan to strengthen law and order during the elections. The proposal involves including the army, navy, and air force among the law enforcement agencies.
During a meeting of the EC on Monday, a proposal to amend the RPO (Representation of the People Order) was approved. If this proposal becomes law, a separate order would not be needed to assign responsibility to these forces during the election. Soldiers would be able to perform duties at polling stations like the police and make arrests without warrants.
