An Israeli airstrike deep within Beirut on Sunday has resulted in the deaths of at least five people and left 28 others wounded. This targeted attack, aimed at senior Hezbollah official Haytham Ali Tabatabai, marks Israel’s first in the Lebanese capital since June 5th. Tabatabai is reportedly the second-highest ranking figure in Hezbollah, following Secretary General Naim Qassem. The operation was authorized by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, based on recommendations from Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. Netanyahu’s office stated that the strike targeted the Hezbollah Chief-of-Staff, who was leading the group’s rearmament efforts, and affirmed Israel’s resolve to pursue its objectives universally. This offensive underscores the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which has intensified since October 8, 2023.
