Benjamin Lyons Urges Madrid to Block Beijing Tech Deals

Fresh warnings from the US Embassy in Madrid have put Spain on notice that Chinese participation in strategic industries will not be tolerated by Washington. Ambassador Benjamin Lyons used his first public appearance to highlight the dangers of granting public contracts to firms linked with Huawei, arguing that such deals undermine the trust required for close intelligence cooperation. He stressed that Spain remains free to pursue economic opportunities with China but must draw a firm line around telecommunications networks, data centres and defence systems. The statement reflects growing American frustration with European governments that continue to award major infrastructure projects to Chinese vendors despite repeated security alerts. Lyons also pointed to unfair trade practices and economic coercion as tools Beijing uses to gain leverage over supply chains and scientific research. The timing of the remarks coincides with a cooling in bilateral defence ties. Spain’s refusal to support US-led operations against Iran led to the withdrawal of American refuelling aircraft from Spanish soil, exposing cracks in what was once considered a reliable transatlantic partnership. Madrid’s centre-left government has countered that any foreign military activity on its territory must first receive backing from the United Nations or NATO, a position that has further irritated officials in Washington. Observers believe the ambassador’s intervention is designed to rally domestic Spanish opinion against deeper Chinese involvement before legislative elections later this year.
