Brazil Accuses US of Unjust Interference Over Visa Dispute

Brazil’s foreign ministry has accused the United States of unlawful meddling after Washington nullified the visa of Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. The ministry termed the action “unjustified” and a violation of diplomatic norms.

The United States responded to Brazil’s refusal to issue visas to two American officials slated to assess Brazil’s election system, as well as a postponement in confirming a new US ambassador. Brazil maintains that the officials’ visit was intended to audit electoral integrity, not to interfere in domestic politics.

Brazil further argued that the US prematurely announced Daniel Pereira’s appointment without awaiting formal consent, a move it says contravenes Article 4 of the Vienna Convention, which does not mandate a specific approval period.

The statement also highlighted earlier US unilateral bans on several Brazilian Supreme Court judges and senior officials, whose US visas were revoked amid claims of political pressure.

A senior State Department source noted that the ambassador’s visa could be reinstated once diplomatic talks bring the matter to a resolution.
