CARICOM Affirms Support for India’s UN Security Council Candidature, Highlights Shared Goals

At a ministerial meeting in New York, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) officially declared its backing for India’s bid to secure a non‑permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028‑29 term. The declaration was made during a session co‑chaired by India’s Foreign Minister Dr S. Jayasankar and Suriname’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melvin W.J. Bowa.

The gathering included foreign ministers from all CARICOM member states, alongside representatives from Grenada’s finance portfolio, Belize’s foreign ministry, and CARICOM’s Secretary‑General. The participants praised India’s developmental partnership model and its advocacy for collective action among Global South nations.

Key discussion points encompassed enhancing political dialogue, boosting trade and investment flows, strengthening agricultural resilience, advancing digital governance frameworks, and expanding cooperation on climate change and clean energy.

Both sides committed to joint initiatives on UN reform, climate action, counter‑terrorism, and combating transnational crime, affirming that their collaboration will extend beyond bilateral ties to broader multilateral efforts.
