China Demands Japan Eliminate All Residual Chemical Arms

Beijing – In a Monday press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning briefed journalists on the OPCW delegation’s field visit to China from August 31 to September 5. The delegation, featuring the OPCW’s top officials and representatives from a dozen member countries, examined sites in northeast China where Japanese‑origin chemical weapons are believed to be buried.

Mao recalled the legacy of Japanese militarism, which not only invaded Chinese territory but also left behind a dangerous arsenal of chemical agents. She warned that these remnants pose a serious threat to human health and the natural environment. The ministry called on Japan to fulfill its obligations under international law by promptly and completely destroying all such weapons on Chinese ground.

Achieving total destruction would support the global objective of the Chemical Weapons Convention to eradicate chemical weapons worldwide, ensuring a cleaner, safer future for the affected regions.
