China’s NCC Deploys AI‑Driven Weather Tools to Support Nepal Relief Efforts

Beijing – In the wake of a destructive landslide at the Chiling‑Rasuwa border port, the Chinese National Climate Center launched a suite of AI‑enhanced weather tools for Nepal. Using the “Mazu” smart forecasting framework, the center delivered a customized Nepal‑Cloud version that furnishes real‑time climate monitoring and forward‑looking forecasts for disaster response teams.

Daily outputs encompass five key variables—air temperature, precipitation totals, soil moisture deficit, and two auxiliary indicators—while ten climate indices, such as ENSO and MJO, are also generated to capture larger‑scale atmospheric dynamics. The AI model “Fangshun” supplies a 60‑day horizon of temperature and rainfall forecasts, together with projections of the ENSO and MJO cycles.

The NCC’s Third Pole regional climate centre adds a regular 15‑ to 30‑day trend forecast series, initiated on August 28, to address the specific needs of Nepal’s emergency management agencies. The integrated information package aims to improve weather‑related risk assessments and guide relief distribution across the impacted zones.
