Climate change linked to August floods, Nepal steps up diplomatic response

Recent analyses confirm that the August 2024 floods in Nepal were intensified by climate change. Rising global temperatures have accelerated glacier melt in the Himalayas and weakened permafrost, creating conditions ripe for landslides and flash floods. The World Weather Attribution study warned that such human‑induced warming makes extreme weather events more frequent and severe.

In the aftermath, the Nepalese government counted 1,411 deceased and 5,875 missing persons, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The tragedy prompted Kathmandu’s foreign ministry to establish an Environment Diplomacy Division, tasked with integrating climate considerations into foreign policy and representing Nepal’s concerns on the world stage.

Foreign Minister Bishar Khanal highlighted that the division will coordinate with national agencies, pursue climate‑finance opportunities, and champion Nepal’s vulnerability at upcoming UN forums. The initiative is timed with the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal will address the assembly during the high‑level week, underscoring the need for global action on climate impacts affecting mountainous nations.
