Cross‑border Wildlife Effort Brings Orangutan Cub Home
In a display of trans‑national wildlife diplomacy, a rescued orangutan infant was returned to its native habitat in Indonesia after a period of medical care in India. The hand‑over, which took place on Monday at Medan’s Kualanamu Airport, was overseen by representatives of both nations’ forest departments and CITES management bodies.
The child, rescued from illegal trade in Gujarat earlier this year, received emergency treatment, nutrition support and a custom‑built habitat while under Indian supervision. Indian officials also announced that all expenses related to its care would be written off.
The repatriation ceremony featured officials from the Indian commercial consulate in Medan and Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, symbolising the shared resolve to combat wildlife trafficking.
Experts say that successful returns such as this boost confidence in regional cooperation and set a precedent for future efforts to rescue and reintegrate endangered fauna.
