Former U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly, claiming that London is moving towards implementing Sharia law. Sharia law, derived from the Quran and Hadith, is the religious law of Islam. Trump criticized London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, stating that the city has changed drastically, and expressed concern over the potential implementation of Sharia law, emphasizing that such a move is not permissible in a different country.
According to 2021 data, London has 1.3 million Muslims, comprising 15% of the city’s population. Across Europe, approximately one in sixteen people is Muslim. Data from the Pew Research Center indicates that Europe’s population was around 753 million in 2020, showing minimal growth since 2010. While around two-thirds of Europeans identify as Christian, and approximately a quarter are not affiliated with any religion, Muslims make up around 6% of the population, totaling 46 million individuals.
