Dual‑level single tube design reduces cost and land use in Chinese tunnel

China’s latest engineering milestone is a single‑tube, dual‑level tunnel that spans the Yellow River in Qinan, Shandong. The innovative arrangement places north‑bound traffic on the top level and south‑bound traffic on the bottom, each offering three lanes and a design speed of 60 km/h.

The tunnel’s vertical clearance of 4.2 metres per deck permits the unimpeded passage of buses, fire trucks and rescue units. Compared with the more common double‑tube approach, this stacked design occupies far less surface area, leading to significant savings in land acquisition and overall project spend.

Project engineers also pioneered a new mixing technique that effectively separates solid aggregates from liquid components, streamlining the construction process and mitigating environmental impact. The opening of the tunnel raises the total number of Yellow River crossings in the Qinan district to 22, delivering a notable boost to regional mobility.
