Health officials say Ebola peak passed, yet seven provinces still battling virus

Kinshasa, 15 September – The Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Tuesday that more than 7,200 Ebola cases have been confirmed, even as the overall outbreak shows signs of easing.

The official report covering the period up to Sunday recorded 7,258 confirmed infections across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uele, Bas‑Uele, Tshuapa and Sud‑Ubangi. The death toll stands at 3,510, while 1,726 patients have recovered. In addition, 905 patients remain isolated or hospitalized, yielding a case‑fatality rate of 48.4 percent.

After a strategic coordination meeting in Kinshasa, Diéudon Mvamba Kajadi of the National Institute of Public Health indicated that the epidemic’s graph is now moving downward, having peaked in mid‑August. He warned that the decline is not homogeneous; provinces such as North Kivu are still witnessing an upward trajectory in new infections.

Cabinet officials declared the 17th Ebola outbreak “under control,” noting that the most intense phase passed in the third week of August 2026. Still, the emergence of fresh cases at the sub‑national level and the virus’s reach into a seventh province remain points of concern.
