Escalating conflict around Taiz as Saudi coalition expands bombing campaign

Fighting around the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz has intensified markedly in recent days. The Saudi‑led coalition, supporting the internationally recognised government, has broadened its aerial campaign to hit Houthi targets deeper into north‑west Yemen. According to a senior military spokesperson who asked to remain anonymous, heavy combat is now raging in the Sabir al‑Muwadim district’s Al‑Shakab sector, south of Taiz.

Houthi fighters are attempting to seize the strategic ridge of Jabal Sabeer, a mountain that offers a panoramic view over Taiz and its environs. Government troops are striving to prevent the rebels from gaining that advantage, warning that control of the high ground could translate into a significant military edge for the insurgents.

The broader offensive is part of a wider effort by coalition forces to roll back recent Houthi gains in the southwest, including attempts to secure the Bab al‑Mandeb maritime chokepoint and surrounding districts that hold strategic importance for supply lines and regional stability.
