Family seeks bail for jailed activist after mother’s death

The death of Sandhya Rani Dhar, mother of well‑known Hindu rights advocate Chinmay Krishna Das, has intensified his family’s legal battle. Dhar died on Thursday at the Sri Pundrik Dham Ashram in Hatkhali, Chattogram, after battling cancer and choosing to spend her final days near her son’s prison facility.

Her sons, Anjan and Ranjan Dhar, reported her passing and announced plans to transport her remains to the district health complex for final rites. They also reiterated a request for conditional parole for their brother, arguing that allowing a brief visit would ease his mother’s suffering.

Authorities, however, maintained that Bangladeshi regulations do not provide for parole in cases of a sick relative, limiting such relief to situations where a relative has already died. Das, who was detained in late November 2024, continues to face multiple bail denials despite partial relief in two earlier cases.
