Fire Bans Enforced in Queensland as Temperatures Surge

Queensland authorities have placed fire bans on several districts after temperatures spiked dramatically at the start of September. Brisbane is forecast to reach 34 °C, a reading that would rank as the hottest September day here since 2019, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Morning data showed Brisbane at 31.6 °C, while nearby Ipswich recorded 35.7 °C. The heat wave, intensified by a strong El Niño, has pushed temperatures in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales several degrees above the seasonal average.

The combination of high heat, low humidity and gusty winds has forced officials in Ipswich and the Locker Valley area to impose fire bans, mirroring similar restrictions placed around Sydney just a day before. These measures aim to curb the heightened bushfire risk that follows dry, windy conditions.

Sydney itself touched 33 °C on Saturday—temperatures more characteristic of midsummer than early spring. Since the start of recorded observations in 1858, such early‑season heat is considered unusual. The current spring season is already Australia's third‑hottest on record, with winter averages in Queensland sitting about 1.8 °C above long‑term norms.

A cold, dry southerly wind is anticipated to arrive by Sunday evening or early Monday, likely lowering temperatures in New South Wales and Queensland. Yet meteorologists caution that the ongoing El Niño could develop into one of the strongest episodes on record, maintaining elevated fire danger across eastern Australia.
