Forensic Collaboration Accelerates DNA Processing for Flood Victims in Nepal

In the wake of Nepal's catastrophic floods, a joint forensic initiative has been launched to speed up DNA analysis of victims recovered from riverbanks and disaster zones.

The Indian forensic team, working side‑by‑side with Nepalese specialists, is collecting DNA samples from bodies unearthed across the affected districts. State‑of‑the‑art laboratories are being utilized to process the samples more quickly than standard timelines would allow.

The accelerated workflow aims to reduce the backlog of unidentified remains, helping families receive timely confirmations of loss. Officials say that faster identification also assists relief agencies in delivering targeted aid and completing official death registers.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this collaboration is a critical component of the broader humanitarian response, complementing ongoing search‑and‑rescue missions and the distribution of relief supplies.

As of the latest report, 1,003 bodies have been recovered, with the highest concentration in Chitwan and Nawalparasi East districts. The forensic effort is expected to continue until all recovered remains are positively identified.
