Global Alert Issued as Ebola Spreads in Congo and Uganda

The announcement comes after laboratory confirmation of multiple cases and rising death tolls in affected regions such as Mongwalu and Rwampara. Although the outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo virus strain and has not reached pandemic status, the WHO stressed the need for heightened preparedness. Both countries received commendation for implementing strict containment measures and for openly sharing risk assessments. The decision was based on scientific evidence, available data, and potential threats to international movement. Africa CDC has highlighted concerns over urban transmission, population mobility, and mining-related exposure. With cases also reported near Bunia, authorities are expanding surveillance networks. Joint emergency meetings are being held with South Sudan and Uganda to coordinate cross-border strategies. The WHO called on all nations to remain alert and support rapid response initiatives.
