Greenland to Receive €200 Million from EU for Arctic Projects

The European Commission announced on 8 September that Greenland will receive a €200 million investment package under the Global Gateway Partnership. The funds, earmarked for 2026‑2027, aim to reinforce the strategic link between the EU and the Arctic island.

During a visit to Nuuk, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Greenland Prime Minister Jens‑Frederik Nielsen and Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen signed a joint declaration, confirming the three‑way partnership.

Von der Leyen posted on the EU’s social network that Greenland’s decision to tighten its relationship with the Union is a clear signal of its commitment to protect its values, independence and interests. She added that Europe is also deciding to increase its presence and participation in the Arctic region.

The package will expand cooperation in education and fisheries, upgrade satellite and cable connectivity, and back projects in hydropower and critical mineral extraction. It also includes measures to improve housing, promote sustainable tourism and support small businesses.

Describing Greenland as a "strategic collaborator and reliable friend," von der Leyen said the investment will open new opportunities and solidify the EU’s role across the Arctic.

Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Recent remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump about American control over Greenland have sparked concern among European allies, reviving debates on Arctic security, sovereignty and NATO solidarity.
