Guterres’ Delhi Visit Highlights BRICS Commitment to Multilateralism

The arrival of UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres in New Delhi on 11 September was marked by a formal reception led by Union Minister Dr. Sukant Mazumdar. The event underscored the importance the BRICS nations place on collective action and global cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs used its X channel to share a brief note, stating that Guterres’ participation in the summit reinforces the bloc’s belief in multilateralism, diplomatic engagement, and coordinated development strategies.

UN spokesperson Stephen Dujarric said the agenda includes a possible meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is Guterres’ second India trip this year and his fourth overall as the UN chief.

Having already attended the India‑AI Impact Summit in February, the Secretary‑General is now in a narrow window—four months before the end of his term—to possibly interact with fellow BRICS leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, both of whom will attend the summit but not the year‑end UN General Assembly.
