United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed profound worry regarding the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza, strongly condemning the ongoing loss of civilian lives. He restated his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, alongside the unconditional and immediate release of all hostages.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, the UN Secretary-General condemned recent attacks on areas sheltering displaced civilians and locations providing food, which resulted in numerous Palestinian casualties. The statement emphasized the need for full, safe, and sustained humanitarian access.
Guterres has called for unrestricted humanitarian aid access to the region, to help those deprived of basic necessities. He urged all parties to adhere to international law, emphasizing the need for an immediate permanent ceasefire. Guterres expressed alarm over the depletion of essential resources, particularly the lack of fuel entering Gaza for over 17 weeks, warning of severe consequences.
He stressed that without immediate fuel supplies, critical infrastructure, including incubators, ambulances, and water purification systems, would cease to function, further exacerbating the suffering. The delivery of remaining humanitarian aid by the UN and its partners would also be halted.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump announced Israel’s agreement to conditions for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. He urged Hamas to accept the deal, warning of worsening conditions otherwise. According to reports, Hamas is still holding 50 hostages.
