Hormuz Strait tanker incident raises safety concerns amid rising US‑Iran tensions

In July, an oil tanker navigating the Hormuz Strait suffered a catastrophic explosion after striking a naval mine. The vessel had veered off the Iran‑designated safe maritime corridor, entering a hazardous zone where the mine was laid.

The Hormuz Strait, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, is one of the globe’s most important energy routes. Disruptions there affect the flow of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Gulf’s major producers to international markets.

The incident resurfaced as US‑Iran relations grew tenser this week. The US Central Command disclosed that, following a salvo of ballistic missiles launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at two American warships, US forces struck three Iranian crude‑carrying tankers on Sept 5. The retaliatory action involved an aircraft carrier and a guided‑missile destroyer, with no American casualties reported.
