Human Rights Groups Warn of Ongoing Risks for Returned Afghan Refugees

Amnesty International issued a statement on June 20 urging the international community to halt the illegal expulsions of Afghan refugees and to ensure their protection under international human‑rights law. The organization warned that refugees in host countries face arbitrary arrests, family separations, and other forms of abuse.

Even after returning to Afghanistan, many face severe humanitarian challenges and potential rights violations. Amnesty emphasized that forced returns must stop immediately and that those needing international protection should receive guaranteed safety in line with global legal standards.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have repeatedly called for safe, voluntary, and dignified return processes, urging donor nations to increase support for returnees.
