The Chief of Defence Staff of Israel, Lt. Gen. Eyak Zamir, has urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept the proposed hostage exchange deal. Zamir, during a visit to the Haifa Naval base, stated that the deal is currently on the table for Netanyahu’s consideration. He emphasized that the army has established the necessary conditions for the agreement, but the ultimate decision rests with the Prime Minister. Zamir’s stance reflects the sentiment of a majority of Israelis who are seeking a comprehensive agreement that secures the release of hostages and ends the ongoing conflict. Simultaneously, military plans for the occupation of Gaza City, including heavy bombardment and displacement of residents, were approved by Defence Minister Israel Katz. The conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant number of Palestinian casualties since October 2023, and international agencies have warned of potential famine in the region.
