Senior officials from India and Canada have reaffirmed their commitment to wrapping up free trade negotiations by the close of this year, marking a decisive shift in bilateral economic engagement. The announcement followed productive discussions in Ottawa that covered energy cooperation, agricultural technology, education linkages, and digital innovation. Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the deal’s potential to transform market access for Canadian companies, calling it a gateway to one of the world’s fastest-growing economies. He stressed that Canada is deliberately broadening its trade partnerships to reduce reliance on any single market and unlock hundreds of billions in new export revenue. Piyush Goyal, representing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, described the current phase as a complete reset of ties, with both sides now operating under clear timelines and ambitious growth targets. He noted that the two leaders have instructed negotiators to deliver a broad-based agreement well before the December deadline, aiming to lift two-way trade substantially by 2030. Additional bilateral meetings with Canadian counterparts on foreign policy, farming, and trade policy reinforced commitments to sustainable growth, technology transfer, and food security. Officials from both nations expressed optimism that the final pact will deliver tangible gains for industries and households on both sides of the Pacific.
